Intro to the emo subcultureππ»
There are a few different interpretations as to why emos dress the way we do. The main interpretation is rejecting the βpolishedβ look society wants to see. The other interpretation is that our outfits may act a signal to other alternative/emo people to tell them that we are part of their community. You donβt need to dress emo to BE emo. That goes with all the subcultures. Dress in what makes you feel confident. But if you want to get into stereotypical emo outfits, here is your guide.Personally, I donβt fit exactly into the sterotype and wear whatever I want! Thrifting is HUGE when it comes to being alternative!!β₯ dyed hair, typically side bangs
β₯ Skinny jeans
β₯ Band/graphic tees
β₯ Typically black with a pop of red
β₯ Black eyeliner
β₯ Converse
The reason you cannot be emo without listening to the music is because the music is what created the subculture. It brought fans together because the music made them feel understood, and all of these people eventually created the subculture. Joining a subculture while completely ignoring itβs roots is extremely offensive.Personally, I am not super highly educated on the music. I listen to it, and I am educated enough to know the basics, but I am not an expert. Hereβs some bands I researched that are emo! I lean towards a lot of mainstream emo bands, which isnβt ideal, but I donβt know much about underground music so I donβt feel comfortable talking about something I know barely anything about.β₯ Mayday parade
β₯ Sleeping with the sirens
β₯ Senses fail
β₯ Get scared
β₯ Pierce the veil
β₯ Black veil brides
β₯ Bring me to the horizon
β₯ Thirty seconds to mars
β₯ Jimmy eat world
β₯ Escape the fate
β₯ Story of the year
β₯ The used
β₯ Flyleaf
β₯ Capβn jazz

I started actually researching the different subcultures when I was in 8th grade, and began experimenting with dressing stereotypically βalternativeβ, however I quickly learned thereβs so much more to each subculture than the way you dress.I ultimately landed on emo, because I felt like I fit the most with the music, style, and core beliefs better than any other subculture I had seen. It resonated with me a lot and I felt understood when I learned more! :)At first I was scared to label myself due to how toxic social media is. I never understood that if alternative people created this beautiful community for people who felt like they didnβt belong to be ABLE to belong, why we still criticize each other. I was so scared of being called a poser that I strayed away from what I loved for awhile, but ultimately realized that social media will always be toxic and you should never care what others think.I understand how damaging genuine posers can be, but some people may just be uneducated. We should give people a chance to learn before labeling them a poser.
In comparison to say goths or punks, emo is less focused on political activism or horror aesthetics, and instead focuses on expressing their inner world.Ultimately;
β₯ Goth is about finding beauty in darkness and macabre
β₯ Punk is about rebelling against external systems
β₯ Metal is about empowerment and aggression
β₯ Scene is often confused with emo but focuses more on fashion instead of music
β₯ Emo is about exploring and validating your own inner worldOne thing ALL alternative subcultures have in common is defying societal norms and just being who you want to be. The whole point is to not blend in, and I think a lot of the culture lost itβs meaning due to social media ignoring the root of what they stand for, and turning it into a big fashion show instead.
